What Is Herpes Shedding

What Is Herpes Shedding?

Herpes “shedding” is when the virus is active and has surfaced to the skin. At this time during “shedding” the virus is at its most contagious point and can be spread with direct contact at the point of infection.

It is possible however to have shedding without any outward signs and this is referred to as “Asymptomatic Viral Shedding”.  It is estimated that 30-50% of the American population are infected with HSV-II and that 1 million new cases will be reported every year.

In cases where outbreaks are apparent, herpes shedding usually takes place few days before and few days after a noticeable herpes or cold sore outbreak.  Because some out breaks are unnoticeable or “Asymptomatic Viral Shedding” many  HSV-I and HSV-II (Herpes Simplex Virus) sufferers are unknowingly shedding and infect their partners.

During “Asymptomatic Herpes Shedding” the virus often times will shed from different areas of the outbreak site at the same time.   New research also shows that 50% of “Asymptomatic Herpes Shedding” of HSV happened within seven days and any outward signs or symptoms.  The use of latex condoms can decrease the risk of spreading the virus to other sexual partners.

Herpes Shedding HSV-I Vs. HSV-2

Herpes Shedding appears, according to research, to be less in HSV-I (Commonly known as Cold Sores) than in HSV-II which infects the genital, rectal and inner leg areas of the infected person.

It is believed that shedding in HSV-I occurs roughly in 18% of the entire outbreak, while shedding occurs roughly 15-20% in an HSV-II outbreak.  Women, according to most studies, are prone to higher rate of shedding increasing their chances of infecting their partners.

Tracking Herpes Shedding, Is It A “Safe” Time

Due to the variability in both HSV-I and HSV-II tracking viral herpes shedding is virtually impossible.  The only way to be certain if the virus is present without an obvious outbreak is to have a physician take a culture of the infected area.

Unfortunately, by the time the culture is taken, tested and test results confirmed, they virus has most often been already transferred to the unsuspecting partner.

In other words, it is almost impossible to know when there is a safe time for sexual encounters.  Pregnant women with HSV-II (Genital Herpes) often times give birth via cesarean section in order not pass the virus onto the newborn baby.

Remedies and Suppressive Therapies

There are many types of remedies and therapies that can help reduce the time of herpes shedding and the outbreaks themselves.  Various over the counter creams and herbal therapies are available during the actual outbreak or shedding period.

Suppressive therapies, usually prescribed by doctors and taken daily are known to decrease outbreaks and shedding in both time and severity.  For some the hassle of taking pills daily or taking medications at all can be daunting.  Eating habits, stress management and other less intrusive ways of combating the virus are coming into vogue more and more.

We recommend both One Minute Herpes Cure and Cold Sore Free Forever, both of which go into greater detail regarding a more natural approach to ease both genital herpes and cold sore outbreak, all but eradicating the virus altogether.
